Today I went to this Ethiopian restaurant called "Red Sea" in City Heights, San Diego. A small family owned Ethiopian restaurant.
The menu was like any typical Ethiopian restaurant. You have your stews (wot), you have your meats, and you have your injera.
I randomly selected 3 items to consume, and about 10 - 15 mins later, I was presented with the following platter:
Yes, my friends... what you are looking at is a mountain of meats. The darker meat at the top of the plate is called "Zil-zil tibbs" - strips of beef sizzled in butter, onions and bell peppers. Next item to the right of the zil zil is a salad with some sort of magical dressing; next to that is the "sega-wot" - cubes of beef slow cooked in garlic, onions, and the traditional stew (wot). The last item is the "fir-fir tibbs" - pieces of lamb mixed in spices, stew, and pieces of injera.Injera is pictured below:
This sort of pancake-like bread is used to sop up all the meaty, stewy goodness. Red-Sea gets a 5 out of 5 on the pig out scale.
I have been to this restaurant. The area is a little bit questionable, but the food is great. Have you heard of Haraar? It's another Ethiopian restaurant on El Cajon blvd... that restaurant is a bit cleaner and more traditional.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about the neighborhood, but the food is well worth it.
ReplyDeleteI have also been to Haraar. I'll give a review when next I go.
