Ethiopian Food!

You are probably thinking... "Ethiopian food?? I thought this was a blog dedicated to pigging out??"... I say to you - Ethiopian restaurants are one of the best places to pig out. They serve huge portions and most Ethiopian restaurants use fresh ingredients and spices that make music in your mouth. The food mostly consists of a bread-like sort of thing called "Injera" - made from teff cereal (google it, pigs!); and meats mixed with spices. The food is generally served in a huge platter family style. You dig in with your hands.

Today I went to this Ethiopian restaurant called "Red Sea" in City Heights, San Diego. A small family owned Ethiopian restaurant.
The menu was like any typical Ethiopian restaurant. You have your stews (wot), you have your meats, and you have your injera.
I randomly selected 3 items to consume, and about 10 - 15 mins later, I was presented with the following platter:
Yes, my friends... what you are looking at is a mountain of meats. The darker meat at the top of the plate is called "Zil-zil tibbs" - strips of beef sizzled in butter, onions and bell peppers. Next item to the right of the zil zil is a salad with some sort of magical dressing; next to that is the "sega-wot" - cubes of beef slow cooked in garlic, onions, and the traditional stew (wot). The last item is the "fir-fir tibbs" - pieces of lamb mixed in spices, stew, and pieces of injera.

Injera is pictured below:

This sort of pancake-like bread is used to sop up all the meaty, stewy goodness.

Red-Sea gets a 5 out of 5 on the pig out scale.

  1. I have been to this restaurant. The area is a little bit questionable, but the food is great. Have you heard of Haraar? It's another Ethiopian restaurant on El Cajon blvd... that restaurant is a bit cleaner and more traditional.

  2. I agree with you about the neighborhood, but the food is well worth it.
I have also been to Haraar. I'll give a review when next I go.
